Phase 1 DB 1

Phase 1 Db 1 Rebecca Lyn Oberstadt INTD670-1304B-04 Leadership and Ethical Decision-Making Instructor Maurice Ivy December 12, 2013   Managers vs. Leadership When you think about management and all the responsibilities involved with the actual job there is a lot to be taken into consideration. Then you have jobs like Leadership. Leadership is not taught it is like an inane ability to lead people by the way you act and the things you do in order to motivate them to do the things you want them to do. Now there is some controversy about whether a manager can be a leader or if a leader can be a manager, and yes they sometimes get used interchangeably, but I feel they can be distinctly separate in their roles. When I think of the actual roles of a manager or a leader they do have some distinct differences. A manager is hired to delegate roles, command orders, issue workloads, instruct and train others. When I think of a manager those are the things I think of. Now a leader promotes by example, leads without having to give orders, and shows their command and strength by being what and who they are as a role model. People want to follow a leader by the person they are but not always do they want to follow a manager. I myself would prefer to be a great leader. I have been in management and it is difficult to get people to follow you when you are shoving rules and regulations on them. But as a leader you can show what needs to be done by living the example and being the kind of person people want to be then they willingly follow you and your example. Managers have a hard job by having rules on them and then they have to enforce the rules and not every like rules. As a leader you can have rules but the lines are a bit more blurred. My evidence to support my choice is the lack of ability to manage people without first having leadership with them. I managed a hair salon for years. I had girls who thought they could walk all over me because I was nice and come late to work and not follow the rules. Well, I learned the hard way being a manager only made them quit. It was not until I started to be a leader and show them the things that needed to be done and doing the things that must be done and showing them the rewards for such actions did they start to comply with me as a manager. Now, not all cases will be the same. I have worked in management in other situation and had no leadership abilities at all because I was either too young or too inexperienced. I interviewed my father to answer what another person might do. He said he would much rather be a great manager and earn their respect by showing the rules, following and enforcing them. His military training came out during the conversation. He feels a strong manager is a better leader because they are the position of authority versus a leader who has not actual authority. I personally would never tell somebody they are wrong or right in their choices. It is not my place to decide what is right and wrong with a person’s personal decision. We each make the choices for our lives based on our own feelings, thoughts, and experience. Nobody is the same as the next person and to tell somebody what to do or how to feel or think takes away personal freedom I feel every human should have. Now as a manager I would have the ability to tell them what to think and feel, but as a leader it would not be a wise choice. Experiences make us who we are; it also makes us into who we need to be to succeed in life. Each role be it manager or leader are in all of us but it has to come at the right time and with the right training and encouragement. No one person is the same as another, but we can all lead our own way to forge a better future.   Bibliography Page Ivy, M. (2013). Live Chat for Phase 1 Discussion Board.
